How to Cancel Any Dealer Extended Warranty
Dealer warranties are marked up $1,000–$3,000 on average. Almost all of them are cancellable for a pro-rata refund — and you can replace them with identical coverage from a manufacturer or independent provider for significantly less.

Step-by-step
- 1Find the cancellation clause
It's almost always on page 2 or 3 of the vehicle service contract, under a heading like 'Cancellation' or 'Right to Cancel.' It states the formula and the address to mail your request.
- 2Get a fair-price replacement quote first
Cancelling doesn't mean going unprotected. Pull a quote from Endurance, CARCHEX, or your manufacturer's direct program — identical coverage at 40–60% less than the dealer charged you. You still get full coverage, just not at dealer markup prices.
- 3Calculate your pro-rata refund
Refund = (months remaining ÷ total term) × price paid, minus an admin fee (typically $25–$75). Inside the first 30–60 days, you're usually owed the full premium back.
- 4Mail a written cancellation request
Include your VIN, contract number, odometer reading, the cancellation clause verbatim, and a refund request. Send certified mail to the address listed in the contract.
- 5If the refund applies to your loan, follow it
If the warranty was rolled into your auto loan, the refund goes back to the lender to reduce your principal. Confirm with the lender that the credit posted.
Upload your contract and TrustedFox™ pulls the exact cancellation clause, drafts the letter, and shows you replacement coverage at fair market price.
Analyze My Warranty ContractFAQ
▸Can I cancel an extended warranty after 1, 2, or 3 years?
Yes. Most vehicle service contracts are cancellable for a pro-rata refund of unused premium for the entire term — not just the first 30 days.
▸What if my warranty was rolled into the loan?
The refund typically goes to the lender and reduces your loan principal. Ask the lender to confirm in writing that the credit was applied.
▸Will cancelling void my factory warranty?
No. The factory bumper-to-bumper and powertrain warranties come with the car. Cancelling the extended service contract has no effect on them.
▸What's the catch on independent replacement coverage?
Pick a provider with strong BBB ratings, transparent contract terms, and a money-back review period. Endurance and CARCHEX are the most commonly recommended.
